Development of laser cutting technology of thick steel plates for nuclear facilities

The laser cutting technology is expected to be a promising candidate for the decommissioning measure of nuclear facilities, because it has a lot of advantage such as its high controllability and excellent suitability to remote handling by robot arm, etcetera. This report describes the recent result from laser cutting technology development for thick steel materials summarizing the cutting demonstration of 300 mm thick steels and dummy pressure vessel, the analysis of cutting condition of thick steel cutting, the observation of cutting process, remote controlled cutting system, the cutting in pile of steels by the system, and countermeasure for fume produce by cutting process.

Electrochemical measurements in various environments; Corrosion monitoring of carbon steel in deep underground environment

This article describes the current status of corrosion monitoring methods and examples of the measurement under deep underground environments for carbon steel overpacks for high-level radioactive waste disposal. Based on the studies on corrosion monitoring using AC Impedance technique, some of the typical measurement systems such as the electrodes arrangement are introduced. In-situ corrosion monitoring in engineering scale test is also being attempted using a deep underground research facility, and the measurement method and results are presented in this article.

Rust and corrosion mechanism of carbon steel in dilute chloride solution at low dose rates

Previous corrosion test of carbon steel in dilute artificial seawater under Co-60 $$gamma$$-ray irradiation has indicated that corrosion rate was enhanced at absorbed dose rates: $$>$$100 Gy/h and rust color was changed from black to dark brown. In the present study, the corrosion mechanism of carbon steel under Co-60 $$gamma$$-ray irradiation was investigated by identification of rust. $$gamma$$ rays enhanced oxidation of iron ions from di-valent to tri-valent. Rust formed under irradiation had higher oxidation state.

Corrosion rate of carbon steel in NaCl solution with various chloride ion concentration under $$gamma$$-ray irradiation

Corrosion rates of carbon steel in chloride aqueous solutions under a low dose rate were investigated by corrosion test using chloride aqueous solutions with different chloride concentrations. The corrosion rate of carbon steel had the maximum value at a certain concentration at a dose rate of 500Gy/h. The oxidants produced by radiolysis of chloride aqueous solution enhanced the corrosion of carbon steel. The dependence of corrosion rate and chloride concentration has a positive correlation with the dependence of oxidant concentration and chloride concentration.

Study of corrosion rate of carbon steel in diluted artificial seawater under simulated irradiation condition

Effect of oxygen and hydrogen peroxide on corrosion rate of carbon steel in diluted artificial seawater was investigated by electrochemical methods. Diffusion coefficient and thickness of diffusion layer for oxygen and hydrogen peroxide were measured to estimate the diffusion limiting current density. Corrosion tests of carbon steel were also conducted in diluted artificial seawater containing oxygen and/or hydrogen peroxide at 323K. The diffusion coefficient of hydrogen peroxide was about 0.8 times lower than that of oxygen, and the thickness of diffusion layer was almost equivalent between oxygen and hydrogen peroxide. Diffusion limiting current density of hydrogen peroxide was estimated to be 0.4 times lower than that of oxygen in the same concentration at 323K. Plot of corrosion rate with the addition of concentration of oxygen and 0.4 times concentration of hydrogen peroxide showed good correlation.

Effect of concentration of artificial sea water on corrosion behavior of steel in air-solution alternating condition

Corrosion tests of carbon steel was carried out in air-solution alternating condition in previous study. It has been reported that the corrosion rate of carbon steel exposed in air-solution alternating condition was accelerated compare with the steel exposed in solution. In this study, it was investigated that the effect of concentration of model sea water on corrosion rate of carbon steel in air-solution alternating condition. The mass measurement in corrosion tests clarified that the corrosion rate of carbon steel in the 200 times diluted model sea water is fastest during various model sea water. Cross-sectional analysis of iron rust layer formed on carbon steel after corrosion tests indicated that the corrosion rate of carbon steel in model sea water is decreased by precipitation of metal cations containing in model sea water.

Corrosion mechanisms of carbon steel in the simulated air/solution interface

Cooling water is circulated and injected into the containment vessel (PCV) of Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station (1F) Units 1-3, and nitrogen gas is injected and filled to prevent hydrogen explosion and to control corrosion of steel materials. In order to maintain the integrity of the PCV facilities over a long period of time until the decommissioning of the reactors, it is necessary to predict the corrosion behavior of carbon steel, which is the main structural material, and in particular to study the factors that may accelerate corrosion. From the internal investigation of the PCV, it was confirmed that carbon steel, which is the material inside the PCV, is exposed to an environment in which the gas and liquid environments alternate near the air/solution interface (Air/solution alternating environment). It has been reported that metallic materials are covered with a thin liquid film near the air/solution interface, and that the corrosion rate of steel is accelerated when there is a thin water film on the steel surface compared to that in solutions. In this presentation, the corrosion test of carbon steel was conducted using a rotating corrosion test apparatus to simulate the air/solution alternating environment inside the 1F PCV, and the corrosion rate and corrosion mechanism of carbon steel obtained from the results of mass measurement, observation and analysis will be presented.
